Here’s a CSNY song called “Carry On” which has gotten me through a lot of crap. Hang in there buddy. One day maybe tomorrow, maybe a year from now, you’ll wake up with a smile on your face and you’ll feel so cheery and strong and ready to jump right back into the world.
“Carry On”
One morning I woke up and I knew that you were gone.
A new day, a new way, I knew I should see it along.
Go your way, I’ll go mine and carry on.
The sky is clearing and the night has gone out.
The sun, he come, the world is all full of light.
Rejoice, rejoice, we have no choice but to carry on.
The fortunes of fables are able to sing the song.
Now witness the quickness with which we get along.
To sing the blues you’ve got to live the tunes and carry on.
Carry on, love is coming, love is coming to us all.
Where are you going now my love? Where will you be tomorrow?
Will you bring me happiness? Will you bring me sorrow?
Oh, the questions of a thousand dreams, what you do and what you see,
lover, can you talk to me?
Girl, when I was on my own, chasing you down,
what was it made you run, trying your best just to get around?
The questions of a thousand dreams, what you do and what you see,
lover, can you talk to me?

I’m too shy to sing it, but here’s a link to a youtube of my very favorite breakup song… I can’t sing it as good as Colin Hay anyways…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzpH0QKrBZ8
I drink good coffee every morning
Comes from a place that’s far away
And when I’m done I feel like talking
Without you here there is less to say
I don’t want you thinking I’m unhappy
What is closer to the truth
That if I lived till I was 102
I just don’t think I’ll ever get over you
I’m no longer moved to drink strong whiskey
‘Cause I shook the hand of time and I knew
That if I lived till I could no longer climb my stairs
I just don’t think I’ll ever get over you
Your face it dances and it haunts me
Your laughter’s still ringing in my ears
I still find pieces of your presence here
Even after all these years
But I don’t want you thinking I don’t get asked to dinner
‘Cause I’m here to say that I sometimes do
Even though I may soon feel the touch of love
I just don’t think I’ll ever get over you
If I lived till I was 102
I just don’t think I’ll ever get over you
“Dry Your Eyes,” The Streets.
And yes, I’m a wuss for not singing it.

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space by Spiritualized usually aids in making me feel better.
…
Or worse.
Damn you people.
You’re going to make me sing.
Of course, I won’t be wearing a little Sally Bowles outfit like Nikol.
@NikePhorus I love you. Most creative way to complete the assignment. And I really do want my black t-shirt back.
@AltoidLover You better sing. Nikephorus did it. Sort of.
i’m not gonna film or sing these, given i’ve been sick and look grosser than death (not even a necrophiliac would find me attractive right now). but i would recommend the following playlist:
hurts so good - john mellencamp
i am what i am - gloria gaynor
a fine romance - lena horne
it aint over til it’s over - lenny kravitz
fighter - christina aguilera
epic - faith no more
once bitten twice shy - great white
here’s one more. i personally don’t like sappy, moping breakup songs. if i just broke up with somebody, it’s gonna be in your face, i’m moving on and feeling damn good about it kinda music. so not sure this song is one i personally would listen to, but i think metaphorically it’s appropriate:
the libertines, “i no longer here the music”:

It’s called Radio by Alkaline Trio. Can always make me smile even when I want to kill someone.
“Shaking like a dog shittin’ razorblades,
waking up next to nothing after dreaming of you and me
I’m waking up all alone, waking up so relieved
while you’re taking your time with apologies,
I’m making my plans for revenge
Red eyes on orange horizons
If Columbus was wrong I’d drive straight off the edge
I’d drive straight off the edge
Taking your own life with boredom,
I’m taking my own life with wine -
it helps you to rule out the sorrow,
it helps me to empty my mind
Making the most of a bad time
I’m smoking the brains from my head
Leaving the coal calling the kettle black and orange and red
This kettle is seeing red
I’ve got a big fat fuckin’ bone to pick with you my darling
In case you haven’t heard I’m sick and tired of trying
I wish you would take my radio to bathe with you,
plugged in and ready to fall
Shaking like a dog shittin’ razorblades,
waking up next to nothing after dreaming of you and me
I’m waking up all alone, waking up so relieved
while you’re taking your time with apologies,
I’m planning out my revenge
Red eyes on orange horizons
If Columbus was wrong I’d drive straight off the edge
I’m seeing red
I’ve got a big fat fuckin’ bone to pick with you my darling
In case you haven’t heard I’m sick and tired of trying
I wish you would take my radio to bathe with you,
plugged in and ready to fall”
These are my break-up songs:
Billy Talent - The Ex
My Chemical Romance - Im Not Okay
Senses Fail - One Eight Seven
Taking Back Sunday - Cute Without The E
All American Rejects - Swing Swing
Jilted John - Jilted John
Motion City Soundtrack - L.G. Fuad
And these ones make me smile after listening to those:
De Novo Dahl - Shout
Ghostland Observatory - Dancin’ On My Grave
Wicked Soundtrack - Defying Gravity
Rehab - Bartender
Keller Williams - Life
Enjoy. I went through most my music to compile a list here, i dunno if you’ll like them all so there’s a bunch of different genres…
Feel Better Joel.
I can’t sing because I’m at work, but one of my favorite breakup songs is by Wham…covered by Pas/Cal. It’s called Last Christmas, and this part always cheers me up even though it’s sad:
A crowded room, friends with tired eyes
I’m hiding from you and your soul of ice
My God I thought you were someone to rely on
Me? I guess I was a shoulder to cry on
A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man undercover but you tore me apart
Oooh Oooh
Now I’ve found a real love you’ll never fool me again
Suitcase by Over the Rhine
Whatcha doin’ with a suitcase
Tryin’ to hit the ground with both feet runnin’
Aren’t you trippin’ on your shoelace
You’re stealin’ away on a sunny day
Well aren’t you ashamed at all
Funny but I feel like I’m fallin’
I wanna beg you to stay
You’re stealin’ away on a sunny day
Why’d you love me in the first place
You were always closer than a brother
I can barely look at your face
I’ve said my I’ve said my
I’ve said my piece
I’m on my
I’m on my
Down on my knees
Whatcha doin’ with a suitcase
Whatcha doin’ with a suitcase
Amour - Rammstein (it’s in German, so I’ll post the translation as well)
Amour Amour
Alle wollen nur dich zähmen
Amour Amour am Ende
gefangen zwischen deinen Zähnen
Die Liebe ist ein wildes Tier
In die Falle gehst du ihr
In die Augen starrt sie dir
Verzaubert wenn ihr Blick dich trifft
Bitte bitte gib mir Gift
(English)
Love is a wild animal
It breathes you it looks for you
It nests upon broken hearts
and goes hunting when there are kisses and candles
It sucks tightly on your lips
and digs tunnels through your ribs
It drops softly like snow
First it gets hot then cold in the end it hurts
Amour Amour
Everyone just wants to tame you
Amour Amour in the end
caught between your teeth
Love is a wild animal
It bites and scratches and kicks towards me
It holds me tightly with a thousand arms
and drags me into its love nest
It devours me completely
and retches me back out after many years
It drops softly like snow
First it gets hot then cold in the end it hurts
Amour Amour
Everyone just wants to tame you
Amour Amour in the end
caught between your teeth
Love is a wild animal
You fall into its trap
It stares into your eyes
Spellbound when its gaze hits you
Please please give me poison
oh my god, someone beat me to that rammstein song…
we’ll have to settle for second best.
Lonely Day, by System of a Down.
yeah, yeah.
“BUT ROB! SYSTEM OF A DOWN IS LOUD AND ANGRY AND STRANGE!”
no no, fair reader. this song is a lot more mellow and sad. good for…well, lonely days.
sorry for not singing, i’m a wee bit sick.
“…And if you go,
I wanna go with you
And if you die,
I wanna die with you
Take your hand and walk away”
Also, Nebel (Mist) by Rammstein.
Skipping straight to the english translation,
“They stand with their arms tightly around each other
a mixture of flesh, so rich in days
where the sea touches the land
she wants to tell him the truth
But the wind eats her words
where the sea ends
she holds his hand, trembling
and kissed him on the forehead
She carries the evening in her chest
and knows that she must wither away
she lays her head in his lap
and asks for a last kiss
and then he kissed her
where the sea ends
her lips, delicate and pale
and his eyes tear up
The last kiss was so long ago
the last kiss
he does not remember it anymore”

Here you go, it’s awful, but a promise is a promise.
The year was 1998 when one man, Mr. Adam Sandler, changed forever the way I approached “the breakup song”. The film: “The Wedding Singer” .
It’s not great but. . . hope you enjoy. And great show!
Wow! This one is really good.
Metallica - Die Die Darling
have a look ! it’s worth it !
ha very balzy there temp
and as for my songs:
Ditto to Swing swing
then theres classic ozzy ~Goodbye to romance and Changes
but Breaking Ties by angra is my fav its has the sapy self pityingness with a kickass angry chorus I HIGHly recommend it i reciently got out of a pretty crazy situation and it greatly helped.
two:
the fuck you approach with Alanis (You Oughta Know)
and the well i might as well laugh at myself approach with American Girls by Weezer
I don’t have a webcam, but “Not About You” (http://www.jonathancoulton.com/songdetails/Not%20About%20You) by Jonathan Coulton (who, despite sharing my first name, is not me unless he came back to now from the future) has gotten me through many a hard time. Also, “Someone is Crazy” (http://www.jonathancoulton.com/songdetails/Someone%20is%20Crazy).
I keep wanting to make a break up mix CD. But in any case here are some of the songs that would be on it:
Build Me Up Buttercup–The Foundations
Somebody to Love–Jefferson Airplane
January Friend–Goo Goo Dolls
One More Hour–Sleater-Kinney
Coin Operated Boy–Dresden Dolls
I Saw Her Again Last Night–Mamas and the Papas
I Need a Man to Love–Janis Joplin
Tainted Love–Ed Cobb
There has got to be some country in there somewhere. I just haven’t figured out what yet. it is sort of an ongoing project.
I’ve alway’s been one for getting resoundingly drunk, and stumbling around screaming either “Drunken Lullabies” by Flogging molly, or “A New england” by Billy brag,
I was twenty one years when I wrote this song
Im twenty two now, but I wont be for long
People ask when will you grow up to be a man
But all the girls I loved at school
Are already pushing prams
I loved you then as I love you still
Tho I put you on a pedestal,
They put you on the pill
I dont feel bad about letting you go
I just feel sad about letting you know
I dont want to change the world
Im not looking for a new england
Im just looking for another girl
I dont want to change the world
Im not looking for a new england
Im just looking for another girl
I loved the words you wrote to me
But that was bloody yesterday
I cant survive on what you send
Every time you need a friend
I saw two shooting stars last night
I wished on them but they were only satellites
Is it wrong to wish on space hardware
I wish, I wish, I wish youd care
I dont want to change the world
Im not looking for a new england
Im just looking for another girl
Its 2 am, and I’m barely awake, but I promise I will post a video of my scraggly self singing this by this weekend, I are not a wuss!
this love-Pantera
If ever words were spoken
Painful and untrue
I said I loved but I lied
In my life
All I wanted
Was the keeping
Of someone like you
As it turns out
Deeper within me
Love was twisted and pointed at you
Never ending pain, quickly ending life –
(Chorus)
You keep this love, thing, child, toy
You keep this love, fist, scar, break
You keep this love
I’d been the tempting one
Stole her from herself
This gift in pain
Her pain was life
And sometimes I feel so sorry
I regret this the hurting of you
But you make me so unhappy
I’d take my life and leave love with you
I’d kill myself for you, I’d kill you for myself –
(Chorus)
No more head trips
Adam Mickelson wins the internet for rocking a Pantera song into this discussion,
though I’d have gone with Shedding Skin, because nothing says “Sad love song” like headbanging.
Due in part to a bizarre Femdom accident that also took the lives of several unfortunate gerbils, my camera doesn’t really function anymore, otherwise I’d jump at the chance to belt this out for all to see.
Come to think of it, I still might, if I can get my hands on a cheap one in the near future.
Anyway.
A little new-school OC-thrash-punk power ballad?
Don’t mind if I do.

Denial, Revisited
The Offspring
—
So here we go
Having the same old fight again
So there she goes
Same old game that never ends
If I could say
All the right words
I know I could make you stay
If I could say all the right words
Things would work out alright
And if you go
I won’t believe
That it’s forever
And you can go
I’ll never leave
‘Cause it’s not over
Replay last night
Talking it out don’t make it right
I know she’s tried, my whole world
is her and all we’ve got now
And if you go
I won’t believe
That it’s forever
I won’t let go
Even if she says that it’s over
I know it’ll be
Different this time
If you’d just stay
And when we wrote this story
How did it end?
It was you and me for all our lives
Come on don’t say it
We’ll try again
And if I’d just hold you
We could last
But she stands softly
Tears down her face
Hitting me, oh God
This is the end
And I’m waiting for you
But there’s nothing more now i can do
How did you know
How did you know
How did you know
Finally
For the distraught guy, anythinig from Whitechapel’s first album.
If you know Whitechapel, you’ll know what I mean
Actually, don’t look up the lyrics to the songs, they’re horrible.
I’ll actually go you one better here and list a couple of break-up albums: Sea Change (Beck) and The Hour of Bewilderbeast (Badly Drawn Boy). If I had to pick one song, though, it’d be “End of the Day” from Sea Change. Afraid I can’t sing it, as I haven’t got a webcam, but that’s alright, since I’d butcher it anyway. ^_-
————————–
I’ve seen the end of the day come too soon
Not a lot to say, not a lot to do
You played the game, you owe nothing to yourself
Rest a day, for tomorrow you can’t tell
You can’t tell
I’ve seen the end of the day come too late
Seen the love you had turning into hate
Had to act like I didn’t even care
But I did so I got stranded standing there
Standing there
It’s nothing that I haven’t seen before
But it still kills me like it did before
No it’s nothing that I haven’t seen before
But it still kills me like it did before
I’ve seen the end of the day come too soon
Like the prison dogs they set out after you
You owe nothing to the past but wasted time
To serve a sentence that was only in your mind
In your mind
It’s nothing that I haven’t seen before
But it still kills me like it did before
No it’s nothing that I haven’t seen before
But it still kills me like it did before
Hey Joel. Not going to sing it, but this is what I’ve been listening to for a while.
I’m glad to see you
I had a funny dream
And you were wearing funny shoes
You were going to a dance
You were dressed like a punk but you are too young to remember
I’m glad to see you
I’m outside the house
I’m not thinking right today
I’ve got no energy
I’m glad that you are waiting with me
Tell me all about your day
Breaking off is misery
I see a wilderness for you and me
Punctuated by philosophy
I’m wondering how things could’ve been
I’m happy for you
You’ve made it hard for me
I counted on your company
You are staying with your friends tonight
I’m feeling sorry for myself
I keep taking everything to be a sign
I’m happy for you
But now I know this hurt is poison
Too sharp to be bled
I’m sitting on my empty bed
I’m on my empty bed
At night the fever grows it’s pounding pounding
I’d rather be in Tokyo
I’d rather listen to Thin Lizzy-oh
And watch the Sunday gang in Harajuku
There’s something wrong with me, I’m a cuckoo
Scary moment, lovin’ every moment
I was high from playing shows
We lost a singer to her clothes
My trouble raised its ugly head
I was revealed
And I was home in bed
I was a kid again
Jesus told me, go after every coin like it was the last in the world
And protect the wayward child
But I’m a little lost sheep
I need my Bo Peep
You know I need My Shepherd here tonight
Breaking off is misery
I see a wilderness for you and me
Punctuated by philosophy
I’m wondering how things could’ve been
I’d like to see you
But really I should stay away
And let you settle down
I’ve got no claims to your crown
I was the boss of you
And I loved you
You know I loved you
It’s all over now
This song always gets me “Broken” hence the name
Broken by Everlast
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4z9erWfXXNY
You’re the air that I breathe
The sun when it breaks through the clouds
You’re all that I need
But I know that you’re having some doubts
I’m down on my knees
I pray you’ll stick this out
Beggin’ you please girl
I’m sorry I let you down
I’m broken like a promise
I’m shattered like a dream
I’m broken with all my pieces scattered ’round for you to see
I’m broken like record
I sing the same old song
I’m broken like the heart of a man that’s run away from love too long
Girl what about you
What about you girl
It’s so hard to speak
I can barely look you in the eye
It’s so hard to breathe
I know I ain’t afraid to die
Your breath is so sweet
Your kisses could get me high
My heart is so weak
But your loving could get me by
I’m broken like a promise
I’m shattered like a dream
I’m broken with all my pieces scattered ’round for you to see
I’m broken like record
I sing the same old song
I’m broken like the heart of a man that’s run away from love too long
Girl what about you
What about you girl
I’m broken like a promise
I’m shattered like a dream
I’m broken with all my pieces scattered ’round for you to see
I’m broken like record
I sing the same old song
I’m broken like the heart of a man that’s run away from love too long
Girl what about you
What about you girl
Girl what about you
What about you girl
Girl what about you
The type of breakup song depends on how he feels about the breakup, in my opinion. For example, does he still long for the girl? Or is he just trying to get over her? Did he break up with her and now he feels bad about it?
I want to get a good song for this.
@Nimby When it happened, he was still very in love with her and trying to move past it, but rather darkly depressed and wanting to die.
Know a good one?
Outtasite (Outta Mind) by Wilco. For when you’re still regretful but tired of being angry and/or depressed.
I was going to sing it myself, but their video for it is more cheerful than I could possibly be: http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=i0seawuhBSc.
this might work
Hey guys.
First of all, I just want to say thank you to everyone who has posted something, especially to give my undying gratitude to Nikol. It’s likely that if someone with her calibre and selflessness hadn’t stood up and done this for me, when I thought nobody could care less, then I wouldn’t be writing this for you today. It’s been a while since the original video was posted, but between then I’ve had my summer holiday to sit and get things straight in my head.
When it happened it was totally out of the blue. I’d been with her for over two years and two months, and although I’m only 17 and she 19 (20 as of the 2nd September) we were definitely, undeniably in love. I don’t think I could have been with someone for that long without loving her, and we had exactly the same tastes in everything, from the fact that we both play jazz to neither of us liking mushrooms.
So when I get an email saying:
“Joel,
I have made a decision and I don’t want to go out with you any more. I hope we can maintain a civil attitude and I have no intention of causing you any trouble. I would very much appreciate it if you don’t phone or text me.
Hannah.”
Just like that, with no reason, then I was.. shocked, and it took the good part of 4 hours to sink in.
And that was where we were at when I contacted Nikol in a last ditch attempt of somebody, anybody, to talk to, who may understand.
So, once again, I’d like to reiterate my many, many thanks for everybody who has posted here or may do in the future. I hope that this page becomes a wealth and depth of song lyrics and support for anybody who suffers a bad break up.
And so, in thanks for you, I’d like to give you some butchered Abba lyrics:
Im nothing special, in fact Im a bit of a bore
If I tell a joke, youve probably heard it before
But YOU have a talent, a wonderful thing
cause I listen when you start to sing
Im so grateful and proud
All I want is to sing it out loud
So I say
Thank you for the music, the songs you’re singing
Thanks for all the joy you’re bringing
I couldn’t live without it, I say in all honesty
What would life be?
Without a song or a dance what am I?
So I say thank you for the music
For giving it to me
Love to all.

Each of these songs speaks to what kind of person you are and your personal emotions when you are going through a break up. i’m just not sure what it says about me that the first thing i thought of was Israel’s Son by SilverChair which starts like this
Hate is what I feel for you,
And I want you to know that I want you dead.
You’re late for the execution…
If you’re not here soon, I’ll kill your friend instead.
All the pain I feel
Couldn’t start to heal
Although I would like it to
I hate you and your apathy.
You can leave, you can leave, I don’t want you here.
I’m playing this pantomime,
But I don’t see you showing any signs of fear.
Watch the video here
No its not a break up song per say but it was what I would want to hear.
“I hate you Fuck you Leave me alone” by Reel Big Fish
Hey, hey everybody!
Look who’s on tv, look who just got famous
Don’t you know it should have been me
I’m not really bitter, I’m not really mad,
I love to see other people get
Everything I ever wanted to have
I don’t really care, how big they get
I hate you, fuck you leave me alone!
Why can’t I be cool like them?
I used to have a girlfriend
I treated her so bad, she went out
And found another lead singer
Maybe she just likes guys in bands
I give up on everything
All my dreams are dead
Maybe I’ll get a shotgun
And try to blow her right out of my head
Everybody says, how come you ain’t made it yet?
I hate you, fuck you, leave me alone!
Why can’t I get my girl back?
I knew you wouldn’t understand
Just what I’m tryin to do
cause you’re not me
And I’m so glad that I am not you
I know it’s my problem, there’s nothing I can do
But I don’t think there is no reason
I don’t think there’s no excuse for you
Well I’ve learned my lesson
Hope you’ve learned it to
And if they’re gonna go and do it to me
Well I guess I’m gonna have to go and do it to you
I don’t really care how much you cry
Ihateyoufuckyouleavemealoneihateyoufuckyouleavemealone!!!
Why can’t anything go my way?
….
It’s a really fun song to scream in the car. Feel better Joel.
This one worked for me
Pilot Jeff
Put the bottle down, finally got somethin’ to say
Take another look around and find someone else to play
Needless to say… That you’ve got problems
There’s no fuckin’ way… that I’m gonna solve them
It’s never the same… every time you slip, then you fall down, down, down
Ever wonder what I been thinkin’ about?
I been thinkin’ bout throwin’ you out
I’m so happy about you… I’m fed up, so get up and get out
I’m so happy now we’re through… I’m fed up, so get up and get out
I was so afraid, now you’re gone away
Sent you packing, look who’s laughin’ now
I’m so happy that I feel this way
I’m so happy that I threw you away
Put your problems down and pick up what’s left of the pain
Take a good look at yourself and see who’s really to blame
Needless to say… you got issues
There’s no fuckin’ way… that I’m gonna fix you
It’s never the same… ever since you went fallin’ down, down, down
Ever wonder what I been thinkin’ about?
I been thinkin’ bout throwin’ you out
I’m so happy about you… I’m fed up, so get up and get out
I’m so happy now we’re through… I’m fed up, so get up and get out
I was so afraid, now you’re gone away
Sent you packing, look who’s laughin’ now
I’m so happy that I feel this way
I’m so happy that I threw you away
I’m so happy about you… I’m fed up, so get up and get out
I’m so happy now we’re through… I’m fed up, so get up and get out
I was so afraid, now you’re gone away
Sent you packing, look who’s laughin’ now
I’m so happy that I feel this way
I’m so happy that I threw you away
