By nature as well as training I am an historian. Everyone thinks of the Victorian era as repressed (liberals) or idyllic (conservatves). Becausee the Victorians did not talk publicly about sex does not mean that they did not have it (Queen Victoria’s diaries indicate she loved it, and would have loved it even more with modern birth control). I found a site with the marriage records for Montgomery County PA (near Philadelphia) for the 1800’s. On one page of 60 or 70 marriages, about 10% listed the bride as 14. While teen pregnancy is not a good idea now for economic reasons, it is not out of line with traditional values as they actually existed. Furthermore, my mother once remarked that in her grandmother’s day, it was fairly common for a teenage girl to move out of the home and take a position as live in housekeeper for widower or bachelor farmer. She said that whether or not they were having sex was considered their business unless there was a pregnancy, in which case a marriage was expected. This was PA Dutch/Scotch-Irish area. Again, teen pregnancy is a bad idea for economic reasons, but people need to be aware that biological drives support teen pregnancy and that teen sex is neither new, nor was it particularly frowned on when people expressed their opinions privately (as opposed to people who had to take a public stand like preachers and politicians.)

For this reason, also, I think the attacks on sexting are extremely misguided. Warn teens about the potential drawbacks, but don’t criminalize it.

I forgot to mention how much I liked the live version of the condom song in #8. I had so far managed to keep it from being in my head all the time, but to see it performed “unplugged” by two talented cast members has screwed that thing into my brain and it cannot be avoided any more. (”Hi, Hank!”) The news and info is always interesting, but I really enjoy watching whichever one (or two) of you nuts is/are hosting being, well, nutty. Because why would you want to get your comprehensive sex education information from the lecherous football coach (whatever you do, DO NOT imagine him naked!) who’s been roped into teaching health class when you could get it from cute young things that you just might want to get with?
