…because they SUCK at writing emails.

“Sometimes I’ll throw in a j/k, but only if I am really upset… j/k”.
Richie Cross, one of the six members of the comedy troupe Cell Camp is answering a string of “reply all” messages discussing the groups history of email mis-communications. Two members have quit the group in the last six months via email and there were some major confusions over a joking suggestion about adding a new member.
It’s gotten to the point that they have all created a special way of letting the rest of the group know when they are joking; a funny thing for a comedy troop to have to do. One would assume they’d have to make it clear when they are being serious instead. Marla Depew (who uses the compound hahahahahahaha) has kicked off the recent string of emails with the question that most often gets discussed in the emails “Are we rehearsing today?” From the moment her “Smooches, M” hits the net the back and forth begins over just when they are rehearsing and who can and cannot be there.
Kate Lambert despises lol and is completely a haha person. Tim Heurlin lets the group know he is not serious by inserting (JOKE). Matt Kelley uses the less common highlighter tool to show emphasis on certain words.
None of them are willing to point the finger at anyone else for having the worst flubbed up communication via email, but one thing is quite clear. They need to be off book for that rape scene (no, that part isn’t a joke) in time for their performance at Sketch Fest Chicago on Thursday, January 7th.
At times their technical follies have even affected complete strangers. Neil Arsenty who uses the smiley
to show his good natured wit, mis-spelled Kate’s name on a string of correspondences.
“We had this long email thread about god knows what” Arsenty says “- probably a scene about mall mimes acting out domestic violence or pop stars singing about their pedophiliac father - and this poor girl freaks out after a dozen or so emails. STOP EMAILING ME. I DON’T KNOW WHO YOU PEOPLE ARE!!! And I was like, “whoops.””
Luckily, situations of misunderstanding don’t stop the group from being able to make the comedy keep happening. Marla believes that even though sometimes emails really muck things up, the group benefits from this form of communication, saying, “Cell Camp really excels in e-mail banter.”
At the end of the day we can come away from this having learned a valuable lesson from the members of Cell Camp. One well placed haha can save you a lot of headache. Keep an eye on upcoming performances at www.cellcampcomedy.com And hopefully they’ll be off book for the rape scene in time for Sketch Fest. ![]()
